From tree lighting and holiday train rides, to festive light displays and the Oregon Ballet – our city is one that doesn’t hibernate just because the seasons have changed. Instead, we celebrate with lots of fun events! Read on for more info!
Wine Country Thanksgiving | November 24-26 | More than 150 Willamette Valley Wineries
More than 150 Willamette Valley wineries will be opening their cellars and tasting rooms for this annual celebration, now in its 35th year. There will be live music, food, wine pairings, and holiday discounts, with each participating winery providing its own unique spin on this festive event.
Pro-tip: With so many great wineries participating, you’ll probably want to plan ahead – so check out the full Event Guide here to scout your route.
Tree Lighting Ceremony | November 24, 2017 | Pioneer Square, 5:30 – 6:30
Join thousands of your neighbors the day after Thanksgiving as they come together to celebrate the official start of the holiday season with the lighting of a 75-foot Douglas Fir tree in the center of Pioneer Square. Enjoy a holiday sing-a-long, more than 14,000 colorful lights, and a great kick-off to the holidays.
Pro-tip: Dress warm and get ready to belt it out with members of Pink Martini, and the NW Community Gospel Choir.
ZooLights | November 24, 2017 to January 7, 2018 | Oregon Zoo
Experience the Oregon Zoo in a whole new light (pun intended) as you walk through this stunning Winter Festival of more than a million and a half lights. Enjoy a train ride through the grounds, snacks, hot cocoa, and lots of holiday entertainment at this family friendly favorite.
Pro-tip: On busy nights, the parking lot can fill up fast…but there is a MAX station nearby. You can use the Trimet Trip Planner to help plan your ZooLights excursion.
The Holiday Express | November 24 – December 17, 2017 | Oaks Park Station
Stepping onto one of these vintage rail cars is like stepping into a holiday wonderland where you can join Santa and his elves on a journey from Oaks Park Station through Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge to the Springwater Trail Gateway on the Oregon Pacific Railroad.
Pro-tip: While the trains are heated and lit, it’s still a good idea to wear comfortable, cold-weather clothes and closed-toe shoes for this 40-45 minute journey.
Nutcracker Ballet | December 9 – 24, 2017 | Keller Auditorium
The holidays are often full of traditions…or a great time to make new ones, so even if you’ve never seen George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®, you may want to check it out. Performed by the Oregon Ballet Theatre for the 14th year, this ballet features stunning scenery, costumes and a wonderful, magical story all set to Tchaikovsky’s score.
Pro-tip: This year there will be 10 performances featuring live music from the OBT Orchestra, something you may want to check out!
